Catalonia’s Leader says the Region has “Won the Right” to Statehood

Catalonia’s leader Carles Puigdemont has claimed that the region has “won the right” to statehood following Sunday’s unofficial independence referendum which was marred in violence.

Just under 90% of the people who voted reportedly backed independence with a turnout of 42.3%.

The constitutional court had banned the vote and police were called in to stop the plebiscite from going ahead. Almost 900 people were hurt in the violence that occurred as law enforcement tried to stop people voting in Catalonia.

Spain’s Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, said people in Catalonia were misled into voting in a illegal referendum Sunday and implied that the region’s independence movement was a “path that leads to nowhere.”
