Trump Tweets Two-Year Budget Deal Reached

President Donald Trump tweeted late Monday that the White House and leaders from the Senate and House of Representatives have reached agreement on a two-year budget plan that will raise the federal government’s debt ceiling.

“A deal has been struck with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy — on a two-year Budget and Debt Ceiling, with no poison pills,” Trump tweeted.

If approved by both the House and Senate, the deal would likely avoid a repeat of the government shutdowns that plagued Washington in early 2018 and again at the beginning of this year.

In the past, Democrats have tried leveraging the need to raise the debt ceiling to win approval for a plan to allow undocumented children who grew up in the U.S to stay here. Trump has used shutdowns to try to win funding for his much vaunted wall on the Mexican border.
